Introducing Material’s first home-grown, precision trained hairdresser Beth…
My hairdressing journey started in October 2015 when I started working at Material and I’ve been here ever since. I love every minute being a part of the Material team as it’s helped me progress in college and build confidence in myself. I’ve entered the National Hairdressers’ Federation ‘Incredibles’ competition and got through to the finals 2 years in a row, spending a day training at the HoB academy in London each time – it’s really kickstarted my career! I’ve now completed my NVQ Level 2 qualification and rolled straight into level 3, training at Reflections on Thursdays and cutting & colouring in the salon the rest of the week. Outside work I enjoy horse riding and have done since I was 7 years old. Now that I have to focus on my college work I don’t ride as much but I still enjoy being out in the fresh air.

I’ve always been enthusiastic, creative and willing to learn so hairdressing suits me down to the ground. I’ve worked in salons since the age of 14, steadily improving and developing my skills at Reflections Training Academy for 3 years while working my way up to Stylist. I joined Material in July 2016 and during my first few months as part of the team Paul took time out to pass on some of his Sassoon knowledge, showing me sharp precision cutting skills. In 2017 I’m following my passion for colour by enrolling on the Wella Master Colour Programme.
I offer all aspects of cutting, colouring and styling hair-up, though if I had to choose I’d say that creative colouring and braiding are my favourite things to do: I feel you can be really expressive though fashion colours and, being a festival goer, I’ve had loads of practise creating fun, unique braiding styles which I’m now offering as a service at Material. I’m currently working towards my colour degree with Wella. I’m loving spending time at the Wella Studios in London and looking forward to becoming a Wella Master Colourist and sharing my knowledge with team!

I am Material’s balayage queen!! I’m best at creating natural-looking blondes and bright cool blondes finished with a high glamour bouncy blow-dry or professionally pared-down beachy waves. I learned my techniques and got lots of practice in enhancing the sun’s natural lightening power whilst living and working in Western Australia. Like my colleagues, I’ve been working in salons from the age of 14, starting as a Saturday assistant followed by a salon apprenticeship on the south coast. From day one I knew it was where I was meant to be. My inspiration comes from Social media particularly Instagram; I follow hairdressers from around the world for everything from fashion to new styles, techniques, colours and products. Getting my work re-posted on Pulp Riot’s Instagram page was a particular highlight!

Paul HarewoodHair Stylist & Salon Director
I practice world-leading techniques of precision hairdressing. My haircuts are structured, often with strong lines, to create technically sound, classic shapes which I soften and loosen to be wearable in day to day life. I left a solid clientele in Bath behind when I was selected to train at Vidal Sassoon in my 20s. After passing the exacting final presentation, I went on to work in Sassoon salons and academies in London. As Creative Director of Mahogany Academy I travelled the world teaching, presented at ‘Salon International’ and ‘Cosmoprof’ and had my work published in industry magazines. More recently, I trained in hair loss at the Philip Kingsley Trichology Clinic to help our clients maintain a healthy scalp for healthy hair. In 2016 I completed the 365 business management programme. In 2017 I’m sitting on a ‘Trailblazers’ Committee – a group of employers responsible for setting apprenticeship standards in England. Material’s team is fully employed.
